Second Grade Curriculum Guide

Religion:

Your child will learn:

  • To prepare and receive the sacraments of Reconciliation and the Eucharist
  • A journey that covers topics:
    • The Creed
    • The Trinity
    • Mary, the Mother of God
    • The Church as the People of God

Social Studies:

Your child will learn:

  • To read maps and globes
  • Communities – past and present
  • Consumerism including:
    • Buying and selling
    • Goods and services
    • Transportation
    • Communication
  • Citizenship including:
    • Laws and Rules
    • Community service

Math:

Your child will learn to:

  • Count, compare, read, write and order whole numbers to 1000
  • Identify the place value of digits - ones, tens, hundreds and thousands
  • Add and subtract one digit numbers
  • Add and subtract with regrouping two-digit and three digit numbers
  • Tell time to the hour, ½ hour, 5 minute and one minute intervals using both standard and digital clocks
  • Identify and count: pennies, dimes, nickels, quarters, half-dollars and dollars. Add and subtract all of these money amounts
  • Read and apply the correct math concepts to problem solving

Science:

Your child will learn general areas of study including:

  • Dinosaurs
  • Solar system
  • Animals – vertebrates and invertebrates
  • LASER Inquiry-Based Science Kits:
    • Balancing and Weighing
    • Soils
    • Life Cycle of Butterflies

Reading:

Your child will learn to:

Writing:

Your child will learn to:

  • Write for a wide variety of purposes:
    • Letters
    • Paragraphs
    • Short stories
    • Poetry
  • Use capitalization
  • Use ending punctuation
  • Write complete, coherent sentences
  • Write legibly
  • Cursive writing (D’Nealian)

Spelling:

Your Child will learn to:

  • Apply spelling generalizations and spelling strategies
  • Spell correctly in daily writing

Activities:

  • Sacrament of Reconciliation
  • Sacrament of First Holy Communion
  • Various field trips
  • Weekly science centers

Computer Technology:

Students go to the computer lab on a weekly basis to experience:

  • Basic keyboarding
  • Basic functions
  • Basic word processing
  • Using educational games

Computers are in the classroom.

P.E.

Students receive 30 minutes of P.E. two times a week in which the focus is on gross and fine motor skills, learning new games, participation and respect for others.

Music:

Students receive 30 minutes of music twice a week. They continue to focus on singing, adding in movement and background about the songs. They will start learning how written music works. Instruments are used to focus on understanding basic concepts of music. They are expected to perform at least once per year.

Art:

The elements and principles of art are integrated into the classroom curriculum through 1 hour of instruction each week with our school’s art teacher. Your child will create art projects related to the 2nd grade social studies and science curriculum:

  • fish and animal life
  • dinosaurs
  • the solar system

Your child will learn skills involved in:

  • watercolor and tempera paints
  • printmaking
  • contour drawing
  • collage
  • papier mache and paper and play dough sculpture
  • marbeling
  • mobiles
  • proper use and care of materials

Health:

  • Dental Health
  • Nutrition
  • Body
  • Drug Abuse Prevention
