Seventh Grade Curriculum Guide

Religion:

Your child will learn to:

  • Deepen his/her understanding of what the Catholic Church believes, how it prays, and how faith makes a difference in their lives
  • Deepen his/her understanding of the way God reveals himself through nature, Sacred Scripture, and the Church community
  • Deepen his/her understanding of God’s plan of redemption and of the significance of Jesus’ life, death and resurrection
  • Deepen his/her understanding of Catholic history from the Apostolic Age to the present
  • Understand the cycle of the liturgical year

Literature:

Your child will learn to:

  • Produce book reports using a variety of modes (drawing, collage, computer, written, & oral)
  • Build vocabulary through reading
  • Examine elements of literature: plot, setting, characterization and theme
  • Practice critical and analytical examination of author’s use of language, style, purpose, and perspective
  • Read a variety of genres: short stories, essays, plays, novels, biographies and poetry
  • Read for enrichment, recreation and life-long learning

Language Arts:

Your child will learn to:

  • Write expository paragraphs and essays
  • Write persuasive paragraphs and essays
  • Write a multi-paragraph personal narrative
  • Research and write a family heritage report
  • Complete internet research on an author and produce a visual information board and written report
  • Publish research projects in oral as well as written form
  • Use steps of the writing process: pre-writing, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing
  • Use 6-traits of writing in all written work
  • Identify and define the eight parts of speech
  • Apply writing conventions of spelling, capitalization, punctuation and syntax
  • Speak confidently in front of a group

Spelling:

  • Practice spelling grade level words using phonetic groupings
  • Practice frequently misspelled words

Math: General Math / Pre-Algebra

In Pre-Algebra your child will learn to:

Explore the language of algebra, geometry, and other areas of math including exploring integers, two-step equations and inequalities, factors and fractions, patterns, problem solving, functions and graphing ratios, proportions, statistics, applying algebra to geometry and polynomials.

In General Math your child will learn to:

  • Add, subtract, divide, and multiply whole, rational, integer, fractions and mixed numbers and decimal numbers
  • Understand number sense devices
  • Learn the fundamentals of geometry including area, surface area and volume
  • Be able to interconvert ratios, percentages and proportions
  • Be introduced to algebra, functions and graphing

Science:

Your child will learn to:

  • Understand and practice laboratory safety
  • Use the scientific method for applications in problem solving
  • Recognize cell theory, and learn the major structures of cells
  • Apply fundamental knowledge of genetics and understand the importance of heredity in all living systems
  • Identify the schemes biologists use to classify all living things, and examine each major group
  • Examine invertebrate, non-mammalian, and mammalian animal life, including anatomical dissections
  • Realize human anatomy, the interaction between body systems, and their importance in human health

Social Studies:

Your child will learn to:

  • Examine the geography, history, government, economy, and culture of countries in the Arabian Peninsula and Iran, Egypt, Mali, Ghana, India, China, Japan, Southeast Asia, Spain, Great Britain, Russia, the Caribbean, Central and South America
  • Use and construct maps, charts, graphs, time lines, and other visual aids
  • Research historical, geographical, and cultural information of specific countries – applying the methods of social science investigation to compare and contrast information for analysis, summary and presentation
  • To use the method of cause and effect relationships to understand and describe historical events
  • Monitor, summarize and report current events as they are reported in periodicals and news media

Computer Technology:

  • Research Author Boards
  • Instruction in applications of Excel, PowerPoint, Word, etc. during 1 quarter
  • Accelerated Reader/STAR Reading assessment

P.E.:

Each student will have 2 quarters of P.E. class with their homeroom class. Students will be required to change into P.E. clothes (health and hygiene purposes). Students will be expected to participate at their current skill level, show growth in their skills, and show appropriate sportsmanship behavior during class.

Music/Drama:

There is one quarter of Music/Drama for students each year. Students will continue to study vocal literature and the background of the music they learn, as well as working on correct singing technique and part-singing. They will also continue to work on basic acting and technical support for theatre, ending in a performance both singing and drama at the end of the unit.

Art:

Each student will have 1 quarter of Art in which they will be exposed to many different mediums and will produce items for public display. Seventh grade curriculum will focus on art aesthetics and each child including personality as part of his or her work. Your child may choose from projects involving several techniques, which include:

  • One point and aerial perspective
  • Rapid figure drawing
  • Wax sculpture
  • Batik
  • Plaster life masks and bas relief sculptures
  • Oil pastel
  • Acrylic paint

Message to Parents:

Parents of seventh grade students should know that their student will be preparing for the Washington Assessment of Student Learning (W.A.S.L.). To prepare for this test, students will practice listening skills, develop higher level reading skills, write persuasive and expository pieces, and understand and apply the concepts and procedures of math.
