A Short History of St. Joseph/Marquette Catholic School
1875
Three Sisters of Charity of Providence founded St. Joseph, the first school
in the Yakima Valley.
1876
First convent was erected in Union Gap.
1877
First public school was founded.
1887
The Sisters moved to North Yakima from Union Gap and began to build a
convent and boarding school - St. Joseph Academy.
1903
First graduating class from St. Joseph Academy
1918
Jesuits founded Marquette high school which shared the building with grade
school students.
1947
St. Joseph Grade School was erected as a coed catholic school
1961
Parish convent built
1968-1969
St. Joseph Academy, Marquette High and Central Catholic School consolidated
to Carroll High School in the Central Catholic School Complex. Academy
and Marquette closed.
1977
Sr. Rebecca Berghoff accepted the position of principal of St. Joseph
Grade School.
1979
Marquette refurbished and grades 6-8 were moved into the building.
1985
Name officially changed from St. Joseph Grade School to St. Joseph/Marquette
Middle School.
1986
Established the first computer lab with 30 Apple II computers, all donated
by parents.
1989
The Sister Rebecca Berghoff Foundation was established (SRB Foundation).
1993-1994
The SRB Foundation granted the funds for the first portable classroom
- two rooms for kindergarten. Changed at Christmas when fifth graders
were moved into the annex.
1995-1996
With a Grant from the SRB Foundation the Kohl’s house was removed
and the Foundation purchased and installed a new modular that would house
two computer labs, 2-4th grade classrooms and 2-5th grade classrooms.
1995-1997
With a grant from the SRB Foundation, the former Parish Convent became
the Mother Joseph Center. The building was refurbished and opened with
one pre-kindergarten and two kindergarten classes, SRB Foundation office,
reception office and Chapel.
1996-1998
Rededication and naming of the modular building to the Mercy building
in honor of Mike and Mickey Mercy.
1999
On July 30th fire destroyed St. Joseph Catholic Church
1999-2000
The School Masses and Liturgics celebrated in the St. Joseph School gym.
Extended Fine Arts curriculum includes instrumental band and strings,
music and art. Mrs. Dobie received a Gates Grant for Computers in her
classroom. Odyssey of the Mind winners went to the National Competition
in 1999. The teams qualified for regional and state tournaments in 2000
and 2001.
2000
Karen Monaghan received a Gates Foundation Grant for computers in her
classroom.
2000-2001
Sister Rebecca Berghoff S.P. stepped down as Principal after 24 years.
Mr. Gregg Pleger became the first lay principal in 125 years.
