What your child learns in second grade

Explore everything your Pre-K child will experience throughout the year, from early reading and math to faith, art, and friendship, all through hands-on, play-based learning.

Religion

Your child will:

  • Prepare for and receive the sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist
  • Be introduced to the Creed, the Trinity, Mary the Mother of God, and the Church as the People of God

Social Studies

Your child will learn:

  • To read maps and globes
  • About communities, past and present
  • Consumerism: buying and selling, goods and services, transportation, and communication
  • Citizenship: laws and rules, and community service

Math

Your child will learn to:

  • Count, compare, read, write, and order whole numbers to 1,000
  • Identify the place value of digits in ones, tens, hundreds, and thousands
  • Add and subtract one-digit numbers
  • Add and subtract two- and three-digit numbers with regrouping
  • Tell time to the hour, half hour, five-minute, and one-minute intervals on standard and digital clocks
  • Identify and count pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, half-dollars, and dollars
  • Add and subtract money amounts
  • Apply the correct math concepts to problem solving

Science

Your child will learn through Smithsonian science kits and land studies:

  • Soil and sand
  • Wind and water
  • Earth events
  • Erosion and map studies
  • Water, land, solids, and liquids

Reading

Your child will learn to:

  • Develop vocabulary
  • Read independently
  • Use decoding skills when reading
  • Read with clarity and expression
  • Use reading and pre-reading strategies
  • Use context clues
  • Retell a story, recalling details and sequence
  • Distinguish between fantasy and reality
  • Draw conclusions
  • Map a story (setting, characters)
  • Understand alphabetical order

Writing

Your child will learn to:

  • Write for many purposes: letters, paragraphs, short stories, and poetry
  • Use capitalization and ending punctuation
  • Write complete, coherent sentences
  • Write legibly
  • Begin cursive writing

Spelling

Your child will learn to:

  • Apply spelling generalizations and strategies
  • Spell correctly in daily writing

Activities

  • Sacrament of Reconciliation
  • Sacrament of First Holy Communion
  • Various field trips
  • Weekly science centers
  • EDITH House fire safety

Tablets in the Classroom

Used for basic functions and educational games.

Physical Education

Students receive 45 minutes of P.E. twice a week, focused on gross and fine motor skills, learning new games, participation, and respect for others.

Music

Students have music twice a week for 40 minutes, reviewing concepts and exploring folk, sacred, and secular pieces through rhythm (rhyming words, raps, body percussion), melody (staff, treble clef, beginning solfege), form (call and response, rondo, introduction, coda, repeat), and texture and expression (layering, canon, dynamics, tempo). They also experiment with pitched and unpitched percussion.
